Pre dance before reaching milonga

1. Dress up.
2. Smell nice (get someone to smell you).
3. Bun up hair/ make sure it doesn’t get in the face.
4. Bring extra shirt/ perfume/ freshener.
5. Shave.
6. Be familiar with the music.

When reaching milonga

7. Walk in confidently for everyone to see you.
8. Greet everyone.
9. Stay near the crowd.
10. Don’t be in a hurry to change shoes (especially for ladies).
11. Survey the dance floor.
12. Freshen up your breathe!!!
13. Show an “I am ready to dance” confidence. Without “Please dance with meeeee” desperation.

Before the dance

14. Concentrate and focus all your attentions on the person you want to dance with during the cortina.

15. Get a good first dance.
16. Listen to the music before asking! (Ask yourself do you know the music, does she like that music, do the two of you dance well to this music)

17. Last check on personal hygiene.
18. Escort the lady to the dance floor (ladies, be escorted!)
19. Enter the dance flow at the designated points.
20. Let the person behind you know you are entering the dance flow.
21. Smile and be extremely nice before embracing. Make a good human connection before a tango connection.

22. Don't be afraid to turn down.
23. Don't be offended to get turned down.
24. Don't baby-sit.
25. Don't ask the person beside the one that rejected you
26. Don't immediately accept another once you turn down one.

During the dance

27. Take your time during the initial embrace. Enjoy and savour every moment. Every step is a ritual. Relax and breathe into every moment. The initial embrace is part of the dance itself.

28. Start of the dance by doing simple things; keep your advance moves towards the end (leaders).

29. Do the things you are at least 90% sure of, try new things only once or twice during the song, if you really really must (leaders). Stop trying if it doesn't work.

30. The choreography of each song could be simple walk related figures (on beat), walk related figures (on double beats), ochos, turns, advance figures and then an energetic ending.

31. While you are in the middle of the tanda and waiting for the next song to begin in earnest, don't say hi to someone else who just arrived at the milonga...your attention should be on your partner... (Don’t say goodbye to the people dancing!)

32. Don't say hi and leave your partner standing there, and return only after your greeting...

33. Ladies make sure you follow the man first before slowly adding on your own dynamics, embellishments. Gradually & tone down if it’s too much.

34. Pause more, slow down more.
35. Keep one partner dancing space between dancers, but move on & don't hold up traffic.

36. Do back steps within the embrace or to the outside/ inside track

37. Keep the sacadas & boleos low (ladies eat up the energies)/ towards the wall.

38. Pause/ slow down to reset the embrace & tempo.
39. Always preserve the balance & axis of the lady
40. Be clear, creamy & dense
41. The less physical energy used, the more comfortable & clear the lead.

42. Ladies, leave the job of leading & navigating to the men. Be a queen; be confident in him & yourself.

43. Man: Once you are on the dance floor it’s your full responsibility to make her enjoy & shine. Don't dance beyond her level & make her feel bad. Neither is she a toy to show off your skill.

44. Woman: Once you are on the dance floor you shoulder the responsibility of saying 'yes I will let you take care of me.' So let them take care of you. If you try to shoulder his responsibilities, you'll never be the best of yourself. To be calm/ dynamic & be a beautiful queen.

45. Don't ask for lessons/ give lessons on the social dance floor. All are equal & suppose to be having a good time. Leave the judgments to the practicas/ classes.

46. Its only a dance
47. Its only the most emotional & profound dance
48. Be nice & appreciative while waiting for the next song
49. In the old days, the power is with the woman. Man is stuck to make tanda work. He must choose wisely. If any of the ladies walks out during the tanda, he will not get dances for the next few months.

After the dance

50. Be nice.
51. Escort the lady back (Ladies be escorted)
52. Re check hygiene
53. Spread the news. :)
54. In BA, it still means something if you dance more than 1 tanda with someone.
